Under the reformed curriculum, Healthy Living and Physical Education is a key Learning Area (KLA). Encompassed under this KLA are Health
Education, Physical Education and Family Life Education.
Family Life Education is an extension of the Primary Health Education Program which targets the students from Year 9 to Year 13. The age
range for this group is around 11-19 years.
The review of the curriculum through the Fiji National Curriculum Framework has expended the scope of health education to Secondary level
under the brand Family Life Education
Family Life Education is an outcome based preventative educational program designed to provide appropriate information to
develop knowledge, life skills, attitude and values that are crucial to adolescents and young people so that they can make healthy
decisions and choices and become responsible citizens of Fiji.
FLE is developed as an extension from the elementary health education curriculum providing an age-appropriate course which
includes sexuality, health promotion which includes HIV and AIDS, safety education, human growth and development, relationships
and family values.
FLE encourage teachers to use life skill based and interactive student centered activities. The program is aimed at engaging
learners to talk about, communicate with, express, debate and explore their own values in relation to issues they face as young
